In recent years, Audi’s lineup has changed a lot, and while some of this is just name changes, it’s not always easy to keep track of what’s being offered. It’s made more difficult by the fact that Audi vehicles all come so well equipped, and highly desirable features like quattro® all-wheel drive come standard on most models. Two models that are close enough in size, price, and name that make a little explanation useful are the A5 and the A6, so we put together this guide to help you determine which one is right for you.

The first and most obvious difference between these two models is size. The A5 is a compact, while the A6 is midsize, with this being best demonstrated by the difference in overall length. The A5 is certainly spacious, but the A6 gives you a bit of extra space, particularly in the back seat. One area where there is an exception is trunk space. The A6 has an above-average amount of space for a midsize sedan, but it is a traditional trunk configuration. The A5 has a sportback design that allows for a wider-opening liftback configuration that expands the rear storage significantly.

Both cars come with a 7-speed S tronic® automatic transmission and quattro® all-wheel drive, but as is generally the case, the bigger and heavier A6 also has the more powerful engine as standard. Of course, neither car is especially heavy, thanks to Audi’s advanced weight-saving construction techniques. The result of this is that they’re both very quick to 60 mph, with the A6 in particular being a real performance standout in its segment. We should mention that anyone looking for even more performance can opt for the S5, which takes the V6 from the A6 and puts it into the body of the A5, making for a 4.3-second 0-60 time.

Interior layouts are very similar, and both come very well-equipped, including the same 14.5-inch MMI® infotainment touchscreen. There are some differences in the details, like the standard panoramic roof on the A5 or the bigger 19-inch standard wheels on the A6. Trim breakdowns are similar, with features like OLED taillights or a premium Bang & Olufsen® stereo with headrest speakers coming with the Prestige trim of both cars, for example. A lot of the differences are actually aesthetic options. Both cars are offered with Black or Nutmeg Brown interiors, but Pearl Beige is only available on the A6. Horizon Blue metallic paint is only available on the A5, while Madeira Brown metallic and Midnight Green metallic are exclusive to the A6, and only the A6 can be had with a black roof.
